Sequins Before Sunrise: A Princess Morning

Do you ever just feel like being a princess? Wearing a beautiful dress, slipping into high heels, getting your hair and makeup just right? My sister and I have even been known to top it all off with tiaras.

This morning was one of those days. It wasn’t even 9 a.m., and I was standing in my living room wearing a sequin evening gown and glittery gold heels. I tried on every formal dress in my closet—twirling, strutting, and enjoying every moment. I felt so delightfully girlie.

The Sparkle Trigger

Maybe it’s because I went on a real, in-person shopping trip yesterday. Maybe it’s because my 40th wedding anniversary is next weekend. Maybe it’s because I saw the preview for Wicked 2.

Or maybe it’s because of that line from The Little Princess:

“All girls are princesses, regardless of their circumstances.”

If that’s true, then a wife of 40 years, who also happens to be a grandma, can absolutely be a princess—sequins, crown, and all.

Dressing Up Used to Be My Everyday

Back when I worked in an office, I dressed up daily. Later, when my role shifted to working from home with frequent travel, I still had plenty of reasons to pull out the “good” clothes.

Then COVID hit.
Like most people, my wardrobe went full-on casual—leggings, t-shirts, sweats, barely brushed hair, and minimal makeup. Somewhere along the way, dressing up became a rare occasion. And I realized… I miss it.

Yesterday’s Shopping Magic

Yesterday’s trip brought it all back. I wandered the racks, tried on outfit after outfit, and let the shop girls (can we still call them that?) scurry around fetching sizes and making creative suggestions.

I left with a tiny shopping bag that somehow managed to be very expensive—and very worth it.

A New Role, A New Season

Part of the reason for the splurge? I start a new job on August 18th. It’s remote, but I’ll be traveling. In fact, I’ll be in Atlanta for meetings on my very first day—not exactly ideal since my 40th anniversary is August 17th. But I’m excited for what’s ahead.

So For Now…

I’m going to sip my coffee in sequins. Because whether you’re heading into a boardroom, a ballroom, or just your kitchen for breakfast, sometimes you need to remind yourself:

A princess can be any age.
She can wear any crown.
And she can absolutely rock a gown at 9 a.m.
